Andersen Press is thrilled to announce they have acquired world rights to Grandad’s Pride by Harry Woodgate, the highly anticipated sequel to Waterstones Prize-winning Grandad’s Camper. This beautiful and timely picture book is a celebration of Pride, the power of community and the importance of LGBTQ+ history, and will publish during Pride Month 2023 (June). Andersen Press will mark the publication with a national publicity campaign to include events with Harry, bespoke POS and special charity partnerships.
Milly can’t wait to spend a summer at Grandad’s cottage by the sea, and is even more excited when she discovers Grandad and Gramps’ Pride flag in the attic. Grandad insists he’s too old to go to the London celebrations, especially now Gramps isn’t around anymore, but Milly has an idea to get the local community together and bring Pride to Grandad . . .
World rights were secured in a two-book deal by Editorial Director for Picture Books, Sue Buswell, through Alice Sutherland-Hawes of ASH Literary. Speaking about the book, Sue Buswell has said:
‘Grandad’s Camper was very important for Andersen Press, and we are all delighted Harry got the recognition and success they deserved for the book – and we cannot wait to publish the follow-up Grandad’s Pride next year. It is essential to Harry, and Andersen, that we discovered more about Grandad and the richness of his life with Gramps, the history of Pride was central to their shared experience and relationship. We hope the book shows the joy, inclusiveness and huge significance Pride Celebrations have had for the past 50 years, and how important they continue to be now. We hope it shows how people can come together to celebrate and express their true selves.’
Grandad’s Camper published in 2021 and went on to win the Illustrated Books category at the 2022 Waterstones Children’s Book Prize, and was chosen as a Stonewall Honour Book.
Harry is currently working with LGBTQ+ charity Just Like Us with special online readings and resources for early years and primary school settings, as part of their School Diversity Week campaign.
Rights for Grandad’s Camper have already been sold to France, Netherlands and the USA, with rights to Grandad’s Pride already sold to Little Bee in the US, to be published in their special GLAAD publishing strand.
Harry has said of the inspiration behind the book:
‘I’m so excited to be publishing Grandad’s Pride with Andersen Press and for readers to join Grandad and Milly on a new adventure. Pride is such a big part of the LGBTQ+ community and it’s so important to honour and share the history of the movement, as well as looking forward to a diverse, inclusive future. I have really enjoyed spending more time with these characters and I can’t wait to share this colourful celebration of love and family.’
Grandad’s Pride by Harry Woodgate will publish in hardback in June 2023
